COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT
THE FILM ELON MUSK DOESN’T WANT YOU TO SEE!
Criminally obscure but highly regarded, “Colossus: The Forbin Project” is a landmark film in the ongoing conversation about artificial intelligence. It’s a cautionary tale perhaps even more startling and relevant today than in its initial release in 1969/1970. Eric Braeden (prior to his legendary and award-winning five-decade run on “The Young and the Restless”) plays well-intentioned scientist Charles Forbin, whose computerized national defense system, Colossus, seems to herald a new age of security and prosperity and peace—but if that were true, it would be a very short film, wouldn’t it? This techno-thriller co-stars Susan Clark, William Schallert, Marion Ross, James Hong, and an uncredited Paul Frees as the eerie voice of Colossus. Directed by Joseph Sargent (“The Taking of Pelham One Two Three”) and with a thoughtful screenplay by James Bridges (“The Paper Chase” and “The China Syndrome”), “Colossus” is a low-key, slow-burn experiment in existential terror.
The FCCB Film Forum will gather on Saturday, June 20, at 6:00 PM at the downtown Burbank home of Michelle and Vin.
Bring a ready-to-serve potluck side dish to share, and we’ll meet for dinner, a screening of “Colossus: The Forbin Project,” and discussion. The movie is rated PG for violence and adult themes.
Space is limited, so be sure to contact Warren, Cathy, Vin, or Michelle for the address and directions and so
that you’ll be sure to have a seat.
Hope to see you for another of our evenings of food, folks, film, and fun!
